Player Focus: Randy Foye
X
Randy is our 6th man. He's our main weapon off the bench on offense, and usually finishes games for us. He gives us that added dimension of being an outside shooter, and he's been quite reliable so far this season (he's shooting 43.4 3pt%, which is second only to Paul Millsap 's astounding 58.8 3pt%). So far this season he is 3rd best in Offensive Win Shares. (Sap is first, Gordon Hayward is second). All that said, no one questioned his ability to hit spot up shots. He has been killed on defense. You may call it subjective, but he's been beaten down by Kobe Bryant types, all the way down to Danny Green types. Everyone scores on him. In fact, his defensive win shares are tied for worst on the team. The guys who have the same number of win shares on defense as him as Keven Murphy, Jeremy Evans, and Alec Burks. The main metric that seems to determine how much good you can do on offense and defense is playing time. Murphy, Evans, and Alec have played a grand total of 57 minutes this season. Randy? He has played 257 minutes.
Okay, so Randy isn't a great defender, so what else is new? I guess that's it. For the role of being a bomber off the bench who isn't good enough to start, he fits the role well (think Jason Terry / Jamaal Crawford). Those guys also set people up at times, or play 'some' defense. We haven't seen much from Foye besides shooting. He has played 257 minutes and has shot the ball 93 times. That means he shoots the ball every 2.76 minutes (2:46 in time units). As a point of comparison, Foye's one shot per 2.7 minutes of play is a stones throw away from Millsap's one shot per 2.6 minutes of play. Foye is shooting a lot.
I'm okay with that. I'm okay with his offense, and how he's a designated shooter. I'd love to see him add something else, like being a secondary distributor, or an average defender. Before he played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Randy played for the Washington Wizards. So this could be a revenge game. I hope he does well against Jordan Crawford and company.
Record scratch: Foye's starting tonight
