Keep Your Drinks Afloat With a Pool Noodle Barge

Summer's in full swing, and nothing beats relaxing at the pool with a few cold drinks. If you want to keep them close at hand while you swim, a pool noodle can provide sufficient buoyancy for an awesome beer-holding boat.

Instructables user macgeek shares his plans for a blown-up version of the previously-mentioned beverage barge. All you need is a pool noodle cut to fit the four sides of a plastic storage container, and some string to hold it in place around the edge. The resulting boat will hold more than enough drinks and ice to last until you're pruny, and should be wide and low enough that it won't capsize if it's caught in the wake of a cannonball. Be sure to check out the Instructable for more photos.

Akouris: Cullen Rompa working toward strong season, making college plans

There is no rest for the weary this summer, especially if you?re Cullen Rompa.

The Plainfield East senior is just one of many football players in the area who are going through 7-on-7 camps, trying to figure out what college to visit and which ones to put on their wish lists, and working out and bulking up for the season ahead.

Football practice statewide officially begins Aug. 14

And Rompa is getting himself ahead of the game.

?I?ve been in the weight room every day and I?ve gone to a lot of camps,? Rompa said. ?This year, I?m doing a lot of speed work, too, working on the time in the 40 (-yard dash).

?I?m trying to keep a good, main set of goals, and I know I have to dig deep and focus.?

Rompa, a 5-foot-10, 182-pound running back/linebacker, knows he?s going to have to focus a lot if the Bengals are going to improve on last season?s 2-7 record.

The senior class should help erase those bad memories. They went 7-2 as freshmen and 6-3 as sophomores. It would seem likely this class won?t allow the loss total to fall below three.

The Bengals already have had a decent showing at the 7-on-7 camp at Willowbrook, where they went two-for-two and beat perennial state power Lemont.

?We were supposed to go far (in 2012), but this year I think our speed has increased,? Rompa said. ?We lost some size and gained a lot of speed.?

Rompa also is dealing with the stress of trying to impress college coaches. He doesn?t really have a timetable to make his college choice, and some athletes want to make that decision before the start of the school year. Rompa said he will make his pick when he knows a school is the right fit.

That said, Rompa has a top five list. In order, his wish list is: Upper Iowa, St. Cloud State, Concordia (Minn.), Dartmouth and Sacred Heart.

What Rompa really wants to do is play football with older brother Brennen, who is at Upper Iowa ? hence, the school being his top choice.

Before Brennen leaves for Upper Iowa in another week or two, the brothers are working out often. The brothers typically work out in a field behind their home.

?Brennen is my main (training partner) right now,? Rompa said. ?He is teaching me a lot. Last year I didn?t play much linebacker and he did.?

Besides Upper Iowa and the other four schools on Rompa?s top five, others that have shown interest in Brennen?s younger brother are Indiana State, Western Illinois, Colgate, Northern Illinois and Hillsdale (Mich.).

I asked Rompa, ?What if you get an offer from another school and you?re more blown away by that campus and program and it eclipses playing with your brother??

?I?m going with whatever feels like my second home,? Rompa said. ?It?ll definitely be difficult (being alone), and it would be great to play with Brennen. But sometimes being alone does sound interesting, too.

?I never thought it would be possible for us to maybe play together. I just always thought we?d be on opposite sides of the country.?

U.S. Tops In User Data Requests, India Among Least: Twitter

New Delhi: US government, which has been in eye of a storm due to the snooping PRISM programme, had the lion's share in user data requests under it between January- June 2013, while India had less than 10 such requests, says the social networking site Twitter's transparency report.

Twitter's bi-annual Transparency Report, first published in July 2012, highlights trends in government requests for account information, content removal and copyright notices.

Of the total 1,157 user information requests received between January 1-June 30 2013, the US government made a total of 902 requests, Twitter said in the report.

PRISM, the controversial snooping programme run by the National Security Agency (NSA) of the US, allowed analysts to search through vast databases containing e-mails, online chats and browsing histories of millions of individuals.

During the most recent period (January-June 2013), 78 per cent of all worldwide requests received originated from the US, it added.

Japan followed the US with 87 user information requests, the UK (26), Brazil (22), Italy (22), France (18), Spain (13), among others.

As far removal request is concerned, Twitter said it received a total of 60 removal requests in the first six months of 2013.

Hopes to see Hispanic presence in Enumclaw parade | Letter

In response to the (July 24) letter to the editor pertaining to the Fourth of July parade: I am with you all the way about having Hispanics in the parade.

The person who said ?they should not be there, it?s our independence?: where is this person?s heritage? The Hispanic people have just as much right to be in our Independence Day parade. This town was settled and built by Swedish, Scandinavians and more from other countries. Go help someone in need, do something nice for someone, no matter where they are from; every day do a random act of kindness.

So, yes to the Hispanics with their beautiful horses and their homeland apparel which is radiant. Bring back the Hispanics and their culture.

Phil Davis eats a lot of shots, pulls out controversial decision victory over Lyoto Machida

Judging controversies seem to follow the UFC everywhere it goes, but Saturday's victory by Phil Davis over former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, raised more than a few eyebrows.

After the second round of the three-round bout, Davis' corner urged him to go hard, believing it would be difficult to beat Machida, a Brazilian, by decision in Brazil.

But though Machida seemed to control the third round, it didn't matter. Davis won by scores of 29-28 on all three judges' cards and won a unanimous decision over the division's No. 1 contender.

Machida seemed shocked when the call went against him.

"I really don't know what they are judging," Machida said in the cage. "Just listen to the crowd. They're telling you what is happening."

UFC president Dana White was shocked, too.

In a telephone interview with Cagewriter once the show ended, White said he was not pleased with the way Machida fought.

"Machida definitely won that fight, definitely," White told Yahoo! Sports. "But that's his fault. He knows MMA judging sucks. It's terrible, it's [expletive], but he went out there and let him do it. I can't remember whether it was the first or the second, but Machida had that combination where he threw all those punches and ran across the cage and ended with that knee. That's when he's really good. But he wants to stay back and be a counter puncher and wait and fight cautiously.

"He's got the abilities, but he just doesn't bring it. He loves the counter and he got taken down at the end of both rounds."

Davis took Machida down near the end of each of the first two rounds, but Machida seemed to control the pace of the fight and stuffed numerous takedowns. Fight Metric gave Machida a 17-16 edge in significant strikes landed.

Davis, who was ranked seventh by the UFC prior to the fight, was ecstatic.

"The late takedowns help, but that's part of my strategy," Davis said. "I get takedowns and work all the time. It's part of what I do."

Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement could lead to fewer U.S. jobs

The Morning Call published the recent story about Lehigh Valley businesses hiring at faster pace. This is good news but gains could be lost with the pending Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement. The Trans-Pacific Partnership dwarfs the North American Free Trade Agreement both geographically and economically and could result in serious job and wage loss in our area.

The proposed pact not only covers traditional trade matters such as tariffs and quotas but also is said to contain some 29 separate chapters affecting everything from food safety standards and banking regulations to energy policy and government purchasing decisions.

Despite having completed 18 major rounds of negotiations on that agreement, the Obama administration has refused to tell the American public what it has been proposing in our name, instead classifying all the draft texts. Now the administration wants Congress to pass new fast-track legislation that would enable the partnership to circumvent ordinary congressional review, amendment and debate procedures.

Stephen Harper says pipelines ?safest way you can go? when transporting oil

OTTAWA ? Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Friday that while he thinks new pipeline projects are a good idea in principle, individual proposals will undergo ?rigorous? review.

Why Canada can, and must, pull off nation-building Energy East pipeline

Claudia Cattaneo: TransCanada?s $12-billion pipeline would truly make the country oil rich, while ensuring the best environmental protection that can be had. Keep reading.

?I think the reality of anybody who looks at the business (is) that the absolute safest way to transport energy products is through pipelines. That?s the safest way you can go,? the prime minister told a news conference in Quebec City. He was responding to concerns about a new east-west pipeline announced earlier this week.

But the prime minister said while he thinks such pipeline projects are a good idea in principle, because they benefit regions across Canada and enhance the country?s energy security, they are subject to ?rigorous independent analysis.

?In terms of addressing specific concerns, there is a process that will do that, and the government will ensure that all recommendations from that process are followed,? he said.

Harper?s remarks came a day after Calgary-based TransCanada said it plans to move ahead with its Energy East pipeline project. The project will expand an existing pipeline network to enter Quebec and end in New Brunswick.

They also come at a time of heightened sensitivity about the transportation of crude oil after the Lac-Megantic disaster, in which an unmanned runaway train exploded and devastated the eastern Quebec town.

For new energy projects, Harper said the government acts on the independent evaluations that look at environmental and economic effects, ?particularly on independent scientific evaluations.?

?But obviously we think it is a good idea in principle in terms of selling our energy products,? he said. ?We have massive energy resources in this country,? he said. ?It?s important that Canadians all across the country benefit, and it?s important that we enhance our own energy security?

Harper was in Quebec City with Heritage Minister Shelly Glover, new Quebec lieutenant Denis Lebel and Quebec City Mayor R?gis Labeaume to announce that the city?s Gilmour Hill, near the Plains of Abraham, will now be open to traffic year-round instead of closing for the winter months.

Harper said that job-creation is his government?s top priority and that pipeline projects can help in that area.

Al-Qaida leader says Egypt's Morsi abandoned jihad

CAIRO (AP) ? Al-Qaida's leader is condemning the overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi, but also blaming the ousted Egyptian leader for trying to "satisfy America" by abandoning jihad.

Ayman al-Zawahri spoke in a 15-minute Internet audio message posted late Friday, his second this week.

He says Morsi, toppled in a July 3 coup after millions took to the streets demanding his overthrow, was targeted by a conspiracy of secularists, Coptic Christians, and Egypt's "Americanized" army for being Islamist.

But he also condemned Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood for having "tried its best to satisfy America and the secularists" by relinquishing "jihad," usually invoked by al-Qaida to mean armed struggle. Morsi was Egypt's first freely elected president.

The message's authenticity could not be independently confirmed but was posted on a militant website commonly used by al-Qaida.

(AP) ? Looming playoffs could force an end to negotiations in baseball's latest drug scandal as pressure builds to impose penalties so stars can still make the postseason.

Monday appears to be the deadline for Alex Rodriguez and 13 others to accept suspensions for their ties to the Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic. While A-Rod is expected to get a lengthy ban, a penalty starting that day would allow Texas All-Star outfielder Nelson Cruz to return for October.

Major League Baseball is prepared to issue two simultaneous announcements no later than Monday, a person familiar with the process told The Associated Press on Thursday. One would list players who accept suspensions; the other would name those disciplined without deals, but who could challenge penalties before an arbitrator.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.

Most players face 50-game suspensions for their links to the now-closed Florida clinic, which has been accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs.

But baseball is threatening to kick Rodriguez out for life unless the three-time AL MVP agrees to a long ban, perhaps around 200 games.

Rodriguez appeared ready to talk Thursday as he was leaving the team's minor league complex in Tampa, Fla., waving a group of writers to his car in the parking lot and rolling down the window. However, when he saw a second group with TV cameras approaching, he said: "I'll talk to you guys, but no cameras."

Rodriguez closed the window and waited a moment, then left without saying another word.

Baseball's highest-paid player with a $28 million salary, Rodriguez played in a simulated game and saw 31 pitches over six at-bats, played third and ran bases.

The Yankees expect A-Rod to be accused of recruiting other athletes for the clinic, attempting to obstruct MLB's investigation, and not being truthful with MLB in the past. Baseball has considered suspending him for violations of its labor contract and drug agreement, which would cause him to start serving his penalty before the case would go to arbitration.

Sidelined following hip surgery in January and then a strained quadriceps, the 38-year-old third baseman hopes to return to the Yankees in a few days. He is to play Friday and Saturday at Double-A Trenton, putting himself in position to rejoin New York for Monday's series opener at the Chicago White Sox if he's not banned.

Barring a rainout this weekend, Cruz's Rangers would have exactly 50 games remaining before they play at the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night. If he files a grievance, as a first offender, the penalty would be delayed until after a decision by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz. But the lengthy legal process likely would risk his eligibility for the playoffs and the start of next season.

Cruz said Thursday he hadn't made any decision about a possible appeal. Asked whether he was told specifically what penalty could be forthcoming, Cruz responded, "No, I cannot tell you. Sorry."

Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta is the other targeted All-Star on a pennant contender, and the Tigers would have 53 games left before playing at Cleveland on Monday.

Another All-Star shortstop, San Diego's Everth Cabrera, could serve all of a 50-game suspension this year if he begins with the Padres' game against Baltimore on Tuesday.

Others facing discipline include injured Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli and Seattle catcher Jesus Montero, who is in the minor leagues with Triple-A Tacoma.

The Miami Herald reported Thursday that the U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami had opened a criminal investigation into whether Biogenesis founder Anthony Bosch illegally sold controlled substances to high school students. That probe has the potential to complicate baseball's disciplinary cases if Bosch's lawyers advise him not to participate in MLB grievance hearings, where the commissioner's office presumably would call him to testify and authenticate documents.

Boss talk: A fantasy C-suite of powerful speakers - Fortune ...

FORTUNE ? Mary Civiello is president of Civiello Communications Group, a presentation and media coaching consulting firm that works with top executives. She's the author, with Arlene Matthews, of Communication Counts: Business Presentations for Busy People.

Civiello, who has advised some Fortune editors and writers on presentation skills, notes that today's leaders need to think and speak differently. Her tips? 1.) Your message is for the world, not just for the room. The proliferation of smartphones (with cameras) and video websites means speeches and interviews live on forever, and will be seen by broader audiences. 2.) Think about the show, not just your role.?If you have seen or heard something that is memorable, work it into your presentation. You don't want to appear like you were airlifted in for your part.??3) Get comfortable with bullets versus the polished script. What you lose in precise, well-crafted words you'll more than make up for in authenticity.

At Fortune's request, Civiello reviewed presentations and speeches of our Fortune Fantasy Sports Executive League roster and for a second year has fielded an expert team based on leaders' communications skills. She shared her methodology and her picks with editor Stephanie N. Mehta.

Mary Civeillo: To develop my roster, I considered what's changed in terms of best practices, along with what has always been important; the visual, vocal and verbal aspects of public speaking. I chose only executives who can be found online, on YouTube, CNBC, CNN, Bloomberg etc.-- places where leaders of public companies should be. I also tried to avoid commenting on those I'd selected last year to keep it fresh!

Carlos Brito of Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD) is my CEO pick: He is a Brazilian heading up a beer business from the American heartland but his message and style speak to audiences around the world. He talks not just about a business having a vision but gets to the WIIFM--what's in it for me--the importance of people/employees sharing that vision. It's a great message to live on in our YouTube world. Brito moves strategically, to add impact to what he says. His gestures illustrate what he's saying versus the rehearsed chopping, and he gets out from behind that podium and walks, not aimlessly like too many, but strategically for impact, either between points, or to open and close. (Ginni Rometti of IBM and Indra Nooyi of Pepsico have both received kudos from me in the past)

Rosalind Brewer of Sam's Club (A unit of WMT) is my COO pick: She exemplifies what I mean when I say leaders have to think about the show, and share what the audience is seeing and feeling. When she got up to accept an award from the YWCA this year, Rosalind first talked from the heart about the accomplishments of the 3 young girls who'd been honored before she got up to speak. No one scripted it for her. Too many leaders miss opportunities to show they are human too.

(Steve Burke of NBC Universal is a close second to Rosalind. He too thinks about the show/the audience. ?More than a few executives who do on stage interviews talk only to the interviewer. In an All Things Digital interview you will see Steve listening to the question but then answering to the audience. I tell clients to devote 1/4 of your eye contact to the interviewer and the rest to the audience - all parts of the audience.)

Kevin Plank of Under Armour (UA) is my pick for Entrepreneur in Residence. He is a former athlete who has the coach's gift of getting people fired up. But motivating the team is part of every leader's job and to truly inspire, you can't do it from a script where the audience doesn't know if they are your words or thoughts. Kevin speaks from bullets, elaborating on each in a conversational way. It's not always perfect but it is authentic.

MORE: Create your own Fortune Fantasy Executive League Team

Antonio Lucio (V) is my pick for CMO. A top Pepsi exec before becoming VISA's CMO, Antonio demonstrates his enthusiasm. He moves, gestures naturally and importantly he talks with--not to--the audience. In a presentation to the Columbia Business school he asks questions real and rhetorical to keep the audience engaged and he looks at the next ppt slide briefly then turns to explain the top take away versus the usual verbatim read along that the WSJ dubbed "corporate karaoke!"

Safra Catz of Oracle (ORCL) is my choice for CFO. CFO's are often challenged with speaking like a real person about and to real people because their lives revolve around numbers. Safra is an exception. She is conversational, relatively jargon free and enthusiastic about how their products help people.

Todd Pierce of SalesForce.com (CRM) is my top pick for CIO. Todd is an animated speaker. When seated he leans forward when he gets to a big point the way we do when we are fired up, and he is great at breaking complex information into the magical 3s: Three points provide a verbal agenda, making it easy for everyone to follow and remember.

Yves Behar is my Designer/Engineer selection. Speaking in a TED talk, Yves uses stories about his childhood to add context and clarity to his design approach. Stories from childhood also are fertile ground for humor even when you aren't a natural comedian. Clients ask me about the wisdom of telling jokes. I always say tell a story, that's better and safer.

Gideon Yu, President San Francisco 49ers is my pick for utility player. Gideon speaks with focus and energy that makes you believe that he can do anything or will give it his all. That kind of enthusiasm is infectious. I always tell clients that if you aren't enthusiastic, no one will be. Gideon conveys it not with rapid-fire talk but with his posture, gestures and eyes. Studies show that the visual aspects of style are what adds most credibility to your speaking -- they show you believe what you are saying.

Finally, I pick A.G. Lafley for non-executive chairman. It's no wonder P&G (PG) brought him back. He has gravitas, and projects confidence without airs or using fancy words. In an interview on stage talking to the McCombs School of Business, he was opinionated on everything from diversity to executive compensation. He emphasized important words--no monotone and he broke up his thoughts with the powerful pause that allows us to digest and remember his thoughts.

[iPad Mini] Will battery loose usage as time goes on

Quote:

When I first got my iPad Mini it seemed that after a charge I got good usage out of the battery, maybe over 24hrs. It's been 8 months and now it seems as if I'm lucky if a get 24 hrs out of it, if that. My sister got her at the same time and she can go a day and half. Don't know if it's my imagination or not. Now I know I'm always on it, and my sister and I play the same games. It's possible I'm just using more than I realize but I'm just concerned, could the battery go out completely where I won't be able to get any time from it?

Each device is different and it depends what's running in the background. If you have lot's of notifications enabled in your Apps, that will affect the battery. If you have the Bluetooth Radio ON, that will cause battery drain as well. Screen brightness turned way up, WiFi turned ON will all affect battery drain.

To put it in perspective if I stream live radio with the screen turned off I can go 3-4 days without needing a charge on my iPad 2. If the screen is on with Auto Bright and playing games or apps like Safari I can realistically get 11-14 hours.

People sometimes make the mistake of comparing two identical devices only to find out each person tends to use theirs differently.

Stimulating brain cells can make false memories

[unable to retrieve full-text content]By activating a subset of brain cells in mice, researchers changed the way the animals remembered a particular setting. To determine if they could alter the way a mouse remembered a setting by activating neurons associated with it, researchers attempted to change whether or not a mouse was afraid of a particular cage. Their experiements implicated neurons in the brain's dentate gyrus as being responsible for inducing the animal's false memory of their cage.

Dow higher, Nasdaq best in 13 years, on strong GDP

stocks

Stocks rose across the board on Wednesday, with the Dow hitting an intraday high, thanks to a pair of better-than-expected economic reports and ahead of the release of the Federal Reserve's policy statement later in the day.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was 57 points? higher in early afternoon trading, boosted by Bank of America and Hewlett-Packard. The blue-chip index was up more than 100 at its session high, setting a fresh intraday record of 15,634.32.

The S&P 500 also climbed and the Nasdaq gained to hit its best level since October 2000. All three major averages are on track for their best July performances since 2010.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, traded above 13.

Among key S&P sectors, consumer discretionary and energy led the gainers, while utilities slid.

All eyes will be on the Federal Reserve's policy statement following a two-day meeting. The Fed was expected to maintain its accommodative monetary policy, but investors will be looking for hints on when the central bank might start scaling back its monthly bond-buying program.

(Read more: Wall St.: Fall taper mostly priced in)

"We don't really expect to make a big change in announcement, but of course everyone will be reading between the lines to see whether the Fed will start tapering at the end of this year or early next year," said Yu-Dee Chang, chief trader at ACE Investment Strategists.

On the economic front, U.S. economic growth unexpectedly accelerated in the second quarter, with the GDP growing at a 1.7 percent annual rate, up from the first-quarter's downwardly revised 1.1 percent expansion pace, according to the Commerce Department. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the economy growing at a 1.0 percent pace.

And private employers added 200,000 jobs in July, topping economists' expectations in an encouraging sign for the labor market recovery. Economists surveyed by Reuters had forecast the ADP National Employment Report would show a gain of 180,000 jobs.

(Read more: Big jobs number coming? Data firm says just 23,000)

The ADP report came ahead of the widely-watched government jobs data, due at the end of the week. Economists surveyed by Reuters expect non-farm payrolls to have risen 184,000 in July.

In another upbeat sign for the economy, the pace of business activity in the Midwest picked up modestly in July, with the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago business barometer rising to 52.3 from 51.6, though it fell short of economists' expectations for an increase to 54.0. A reading above 50 indicates expansion.

And U.S. labor costs rose 0.5 percent in the second quarter, according to the Labor Department. Economists polled by Reuters had expected a gain of 0.4 percent.

About 60 percent of S&P 500 companies have posted quarterly results so far, with 67 percent of firms exceeding earnings expectations and about 55 topping revenue estimates, according to the latest data from Thomson Reuters.

Asian and European shares were mixed ahead of the Fed announcement. The Japanese Nikkei widened losses as dollar-yen fell below the 98-handle in afternoon trade on Wednesday, as investors digested the latest batch of corporate earnings. The Nikkei has been steadily declining since hitting a two-month high at 14,953 points on July 19.
