Child Abuse Prevention Grants Awarded Across South Carolina ...

Five organizations in South Carolina are receiving grant funding under the Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention program. Children?s Trust administers the federal Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention (CBCAP) grants in South Carolina. These grants are funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families.

These programs are innovative, child-centered and family-focused. They work to strengthen families using proven protective factors. These applicants were selected through a competitive grant process. Community leaders from across the state participated reviewed and made award recommendations to the Board of Directors of Children?s Trust. Funding was effective October 2012. Grants are for a three-year cycle through September 2015 pending program performance.

Nonprofit, faith-based, and public serving organizations were invited to apply. Consideration was given to those organizations whose mission and programs align with Children?s Trust?s effort to prevent child abuse, neglect and unintentional injuries by promoting healthy, nurturing relationships between children and adults.

According to Sue Williams, Chief Executive Officer of Children?s Trust, ?All these programs impact primary and secondary prevention efforts. The goal is to positively influence parents, guardians, caregivers, and children before abuse or neglect occurs. These funds will also be targeted toward populations who are considered to be ?at risk? because of their life situations.?

Sue Williams adds, ?These programs are important to our children and to our state. They serve as innovative evidence-based, best practice models. We use the work here to inform other prevention partners throughout the state on what is working at the ground level to help keep our children safe. ?
