A beery good time: Steamtown Beer and Music Festival planned for ...

Live music, fresh, hot food and ice-cold craft brews on a summer day. What more could you want?

That's the idea behind the inaugural Steamtown Beer and Music Festival, slated for Saturday, June 15, at Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain.

More than 50 local and national breweries will offer samples of unique craft beers during two sessions that day, between noon and 4 p.m., and 6 and 10 p.m. Numerous food vendors will serve a variety of snacks to pair with the libations, and guests will be entertained by the likes of Fuel, Muscle Shoals Revival and Scranton natives the Menzingers.

Additionally, festival producer Jon Henderson said guests can expect to meet culinary personalities, enjoy cooking demonstrations and beer seminars, plus activities like paintball and the 16-foot mustache see-saw.

His company, Good Time Tricyle Productions, has put on the Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival for years, he said. He thought the festival model would adapt well to Northeast Pennsylvania.

"We saw an opportunity to bring it to Scranton and offer the chance for discovery for attendees with the food component, the beer component and the music component," Mr. Henderson said.

All of the brewers were chosen carefully and offer American craft beers, he said, adding the admission price includes all beer samples.

"People are going to have the opportunity to try beers they've never had the opportunity to try," Mr. Henderson said. "These beers are going to be available at local retailers, and we've created an app to take notes and rate beers that gets you involved in the festival. It's really interactive."

There's a nice contingent of Pennsylvania beers, as well as some from Colorado and elsewhere in the states. The bonus for festivalgoers will be the chance to meet and speak with many of the makers in person.

On the food side of things, Mr. Henderson said a la carte menus designed by local and regional chefs will offer guests exciting flavors and easy-to-handle meals they can grab and go.

"We were looking for food you can drink a beer with and enjoy, without needing to wash hands right away or use Wetnaps," he explained. "You can have your food in one hand, and a beer in another."

The festival will take place, rain or shine, and Mr. Henderson said he intends to make it an annual tradition in Scranton.

"We're vested. We don't do anything once. We like to do it and grow and grow," he promised. "Scranton is a big beer-centric city, and this offers something unique to the residents. It's about coming out and having a great time."
