FRUITA, Colo.- City of Fruita officials are making an effort to ensure that the North Fruita Desert is recognized in the BLM?s new resource management plan.

The plan will provide guidelines for management decisions over the next two decades for more than one million acres in Mesa and Garfield counties.

Officials plan to write a letter to BLM at tonight's city council to let them know where they stand on the special resource management section of the plan, which is where mountain biking is known for.

They want to make sure the North Fruita desert isn't reduced in size and that mineral material extraction is minimized.

?Outdoor recreation is about the experience and getting out there and experiencing the outdoors,? said Ture Nycum, director of Parks and Recreation for Fruita. ?If there is mining going on and you are trying to ride your mountain bike, or you are trying to take a hike, the experience is diminished. We are trying to preserve that and allow for the growth in the future.?

Officials say they don't necessarily favor one particular plan out of the four, but one that will ensure that the biking industry won't be affected by this new plan.

The City of Fruita is heavily influenced by outdoor recreation because it draws in many tourists.
